What to Expect When Moving

When you move home there is a certain expectation that looms in the air. You may feel anxious and excited at the same time, especially if it’s your first move. You may even have worries like, what if I don’t like my new neighbours? What if this is not the right neighbourhood for me? Relax. This will be your new adventure and as soon as you start to pack you will see a fresh perspective that comes with moving. Change is as good as a holiday they say.

Plan ahead

Don’t just pack in without a plan. Your biggest mistake will be not having a system; plan and prepare is the name of the game. Don’t choose the first home-movers agency that pops up on your search engine. Take time to get quotes and do a thorough search

If you’re moving into a new place for the very first time, then you’re probably worried about the cost involved. On top of buying furniture and preparing for possible maintenance checks, if you’ve worked out the housing cost with a bond repayment calculator, you will have a greater idea of what to expect. If you have a few bucks to spare then you’re going to need it months down the line.

Get help

If friends are helping you to pack, stay on top of your game by arranging a packing system and stick to it. Have blank inventory sheets prepared so one person can tackle each area or room. You will appreciate the help, so don’t tell yourself you can do it on your own. Once you have a system in place, you can feel rest assured that no one will be doing their own thing. Hand each one of your helpers with a pen and black marker. Sort out packing materials like newspaper, tape and dispenser boxes. Also, avoid packing things in garbage bags. Well-meaning friends or family could accidentally throw them out on moving day.

Protect your valuables

Find a safe place to store your valuables on moving day. It’s even best to prepack your valuables and drop them off at a friend’s place. Once the move is over and you have everything sorted you can pick it up again. Moving day can end up being chaotic; it would be a safe bet to insure anything that’s valuable or breakable if you’re using a moving company. If you’re moving a computer, do a quick backup of important files just in case something happens in transit.

Planning ahead leaves rooms for free head space. You are going to need it, especially when you have to unpack and think about where all your items are going.
