A Russian billionaire investor paid $100 million USD for a French chateau-style mansion in Silicon Valley, marking the highest known price paid for a single-family home in the U.S.

The purchase of the 25500 square foot home in Los Altos Hills is set on seven hectares in hills overlooking San Francisco Bay, California and the estate features a ballroom, wine cellar, gym, spa and pools inside and outside.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the purchaser is Yuri Milner, 49, an investor in Facebook, Groupon and Zynga, and the founder of Digital Sky Technologies, an investment firm he started in 2005.

The sale price beat the previous high of $US95 million in 2008 for an estate in Palm Beach, Florida and underscores the strength of some luxury properties in an otherwise depressed housing market.
