GOOD CAUSE: Gift Giving With A Difference
December 11, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Popular gifts this year include the selection from the Oxfam Unwrapped program. The increase in purchases for these gifts has doubled since commencing in 2005.
The most popular gift last year was the chicken and this year the chicken will support Oxfam’s work with women in Laos to help them learn how to rear poultry to earn a living.
Generation Y are increasingly purchasing these gifts and last year, the quirkiest gift purchased by the 15-29 year olds was cattle manure, which helped people in Sri Lanka to use it as a fertilizer to increase their crops.

Other gifts available include the Goat for $39. One goat can quickly turn into a herd, which can be sold or bred, not to mention the milk and manure they produce which assists families to live. Pigs cost $35 and Oxfam trains people how to care for and raise piglets, which can be sold at markets, again providing income. The popular chicken, costs $10.
GOOD CAUSE: International Day of Disabled People
December 1, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Thursday 3rd December 2009 is the International Day of the Disabled People. The World Health Organisation estimates that there are 600 million disabled people worldwide, approximately 10% of the world population. It is also estimated that about 80% of all disabled people live in developing countries.
In 1982 the United Nations committed to promote the full participation of disabled people in social life and development, as well as prevention and rehabilitation measures. Even today, disabled people are still excluded from society in many countries.
Handicap International has in 20 years, changed from being an emergency organisation with a medical focus on disabled people, to an organisation which promotes the human rights of disabled people. They are working in partnership with organisations at local, national and international levels to empower disabled people worldwide and encourage their inclusion into society.
This day aims to raise awareness on disabled people’s rights at national and international levels.

GOOD CAUSE: World AIDS Day
November 27, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Established in 1988 by the World Health Organisation, World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st and is recognized by the symbol of a red ribbon.
It is estimated that if more is not done to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic it is on course to be one of the worst in history, with millions more people estimated to become infected by the end of this decade.

It is estimated that just over 33 million people are living with HIV throughout the world and approximately 17,444 in Australia.
So what is the difference between HIV and AIDS? HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) destroys certain white blood cells that are critical to the normal function of the human immune system, which defends the body against illness.
When HIV weakens the immune system, a person is more susceptible to developing a variety of cancers and becoming infected with viruses, bacteria and parasites. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a severely weakened immune system of a person who most probably has developed about 25 different infections.

On World Aids Day, do what you can. Support financially, help someone out that is debilitated by HIV/AIDS or attend one of the many functions being held throughout the world.
Visit the AVERT site to learn more, or of course the World Health Organisation site.
GOOD CAUSE: Anti-Bullying Week
November 20, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Globally, bullying has always been a problem in schools and to a certain extent in the home, usually by an elder sibling. Schools are finding more ways to combat school bullying, but do all schools know how to cope with “cyberbullying”?
The Anti Bullying Alliance is a group made up of 60 organisations across the UK. Their mission is to stamp out bullying and this year’s Anti-Bullying Week campaign is on cyberbullying – the use of mobile phones, the internet and other technology to deliberately upset someone else. Cyberbullying is different from what we generally label “bullying”.

You can be cyberbullied 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the internet and mobile phones. It is difficult to control the spread of unwanted messages, people who cyberbully can remain anonymous, anyone can be a target, anyone can bully, age or size is not important.
Anti-Bullying Week sends a clear and positive message that bullying is neither acceptable or inevitable and given that bullying is a global issue that takes many shapes and forms, it is something that everyone can learn something from.

GOOD CAUSE: One Million Women and Climate Change
November 9, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
What is 1 Million Women? A non profit organization consisting of daughters, mothers, sisters and grand mothers collectively working together to cut 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas pollutant which is triggering climate change.

Each member’s challenge is to cut 1 tonne of carbon dioxide from their daily lives, within a year of joining. The challenge is to have 1 million women, reducing their carbon emission by one tonne. As at today, there are 7,644 women trying to do this, me being one of those determined women.
1 million tonnes of carbon is a big figure and tough to visualize, given we can’t see it, but this is ways to think about it:
Enough gas to fill 2.1 billion wheelie bins with carbon dioxide
20 billion balloons
The pollution created by 250,000 cars in a year
The amount of Carbon Dioxide pollution given off by a giant coal-fired power station every 2 months
Where to start? One of the benefits of 1 Million Women is they have a guide showing what you can do in different areas of your daily life. There are progress charts to follow how you are going plus the benefits of online forums and events to help pick up tips to learn more.
There are five areas that I can look at immediately to head towards my goal:
FOOD: Cut out 1one red meaty meal a week for at least a month.
HOUSEHOLD: Ditch the second fridge to cut back on electricity consumption
FLIGHTS: Use tele or video-conference to cut at least one short-haul return flight.
SHOPPING: Recycle at home or away to avoid wasting resources
GETTING AROUND: Cut 5km or more a week of car travel by using online services

GOOD CAUSE: Movember for Prostate Cancer and Male Depression
November 6, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Did you know, one in eight men will experience depression in their lifetime, most of whom will not seek help. One in 11 men will develop prostate cancer before they are 70 and about 3,000 men die of prostate cancer in Australia each year.
Movember’s mission is to change the face of men’s health and concentrate on the awareness of depression in men and prostate cancer.
It’s mission is growing throughout the world, and Down Under is supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue: the national depression initiative.
Historically men are poor at looking after their health and statistics show the life expectancy for an Australia male is 78.6 years compared to women of 83.5 years. Studies have also shown that men rarely have health check ups because:
they are scared it will lead to a hospital visit;
embarrassed to discuss their health issues;
find it too hard to see a GP because of limited opening hours;
can’t be bothered marking an appointment;
and, it has been found the reason for the poor state of men’s health is mainly due to a lack of awareness.
By using the moustache as a catalyst, Movember hopes to bring about change and alter the way of thinking about the serious issues of men’s health by putting a fun twist on it. Men are being asked to “grow that moustache” and be sponsored by your supporters.
Regardless of how cultivated that Mo is – give generously to those who are raising funds for this special cause.

GOOD CAUSE: OzHarvest and the One Million Meals Campaign
November 4, 2009 by simon · View Comments
Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Each day Australia’s greatest cooks are not just playing Chef. They are also feeding the hungry and homeless.
Ever wondered what happens to the left overs and excess food from restaurants, retailers, food outlets and corporate kitchens? Previously the thousands of kilograms of food was dumped and turned into landfill.
Not any more. OzHarvest is a not-for-profit oganisation and has found a way to save the foods to feed the communities at risk. Established in November 2004, with one van, OzHarvest rescues the excess food from these venues across Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong. Each month, OzHarvest’s fleet of vans delivers around 100,000 meals to over 150 charities.
How can you help? Simply SMS FOOD to 1991 1121 and your $3.50 donation will help OzHarvest raise $1 million by July 2010 so they can distribute one million more meals.
