Simple ways to decorate your deck

Having a deck in your backyard can provide hours of fun and entertainment for your family. You can have sundowners after a long day at work or set up a play area for your children so they can enjoy time in the great outdoors. It is the perfect addition to any yard, whether it is big or small.

But there is a dilemma that some deck owners have, and that is how to decorate their deck. You can spruce up your wooden decking by using some creativity and DIY skills. You could hang some pretty string lights along the wire fencing or wooden railing around your deck or you could install a plant wall along one side for some greenery. If you are not sure where to start decorating your deck, below are some simple ways to transform the space.

Amp up the ambience

An outside deck is the perfect place for summer dinner parties. You can watch the sunset with friends and family and enjoy time around a braai with some snacks and drinks. If you want to make the atmosphere even more relaxing and special, you can invest in some outdoor string lights to hang around the deck.

You can speak to local decking suppliers to find a railing that will match your deck, and hang the lights from this or you could opt for solar lamps that can be stuck into the ground for some added ambience. Solar lights are a good choice because they are energy efficient and are designed to be in the outdoors. An orange or “warm white” bulb is a great choice as it will make the space feel welcoming and intimate.

Comfy and cosy

Spending time on your deck is never time wasted, but it can be improved with some comfortable and pretty outdoor furniture. You can look for wicker chairs and tables to match the rustic style of the wood of your deck or pot for a modern style of glass and metal.

You will need to ensure that the furniture that you choose is made for outdoor use or if you have decided on wooden furniture, that it has been properly water-proofed and treated against the elements. Look for durable but comfortable cushions for the couches so guests can lean back and relax and be sure to bring the cushions in every evening, in case it rains and they become damaged.

Give it some greenery

If you are looking for a unique way to spruce up your deck, you can introduce some greenery to it. An effective way to do this is to look into creating a plant or herb wall. It is easily done with a pallet, some paint, soil and (of course) some plans or herbs that you enjoy.

Remember to treat the pallet before you plant anything, as this will stop it from becoming waterlogged or sun damaged. You could varnish it in a deep stain to match the rest of your deck or paint it in a fun colour to bring in some visual interest. Be sure to use a rubber mat or tarpaulin underneath the soil so it does not fall out and moisture is maintained. A plant wall is the perfect way to bring in some greenery and have some herbs close by for braais and outdoor parties.

Perky privacy screens

Sitting outside on your deck is a fabulous way to spend an evening. But it can become uncomfortable when your neighbour is able to look into your garden and watch what you are doing. The simple way to remedy this? Look for a pretty privacy screen for around your deck.

A privacy screen can be anything from some light blankets hung from the awning which you can close to keep out the neighbours or a screen made from PVC pipes and sheeting for a more durable option. Be sure to look for one that still lets in a bit of light and that matches the rest of your outdoor decor. You could also invest in a shade cloth that you can roll and unroll from your roof to hang over like a screen. This is an affordable option but be sure you do not choose one that is too thick as this will block out your view.

Enjoy the outdoor life

Your deck does not have to be a boring space. You can spice it up and make it look welcoming and glamorous with just a few simple tricks. Start off by buying some string lights to  hang from your railing or wrap them around a nearby tree. Then look for some chic and comfortable furniture so you can enjoy the sunrise and the sunset.

If you want to bring in a little quirkiness, you could create a plant or herb wall to decorate your deck. This way you will have some stunning decoration that is also functional (fresh herbs for your lemon-and-herb braai marinade, anyone?). Let your imagination run free when thinking of how to decorate your wooden deck.
