Over a glass of champagne this weekend with a friend who has recently moved house, we all had a laugh over the “shedding of “stuff”.
As a person who has collected enormous treasures throughout his travels around the world, there has also been a number of purchases of beautiful antique furnishings and art within Australia.
It has been said that we should move house every 7-10 years, so we can clean out our “stuff”. Our homes are our havens where we continue to add special treasures that hold special memories. Unfortunately, not everyone believes our treasures are that special. To some, these treasures are just dust collectors. These people clearly don’t have the same fond memories you have and don’t realize how special these treasures are!
What made us laugh during our conversation was the expectation of what would be valuable to one person, wasn’t to another. The price expectations of valuable treasures, went for much less than expected and treasures that were expected to bring little, proved to be worth much more.
With sites like eBay now available, we no longer need to have the weekend garage sale. No longer do we need to stick signs on street poles, set up stands, have cash available for change and have all the neighbours pouring over our personal stuff.
The internet has made our lives very easy. It is unlikely you will recoup the money spent on purchasing your treasures, however something is better than nothing. No one is going to have the same memories you have accumulated. The treasures you have purchased are there to remind you of the wonderful experience you have had.
Hopefully you will always have your memories. Do you need to keep those treasures around collecting dust?
