Internet Scams: Email Charlatans and Judge Judy (Part 2)

Sometimes in the middle of the night, if I can’t sleep, I either get up and do so work in the peace and quiet of the night, or I watch television. Last night I chose tv. I can’t believe at 4.30am and I was laughing my head off.

Following on from hearing of the person wanting to purchase a property once his cheque from Nigeria arrived, this story is along the same lines.

Judge Judy was on. What a tough lady she is! The Plaintiff was an owner of a general store, who also was a pawnbroker and had the facility to cash cheques for clients he knew. The Defendant was a 47 year old woman on a disability pension who spent most of her day on the internet. She stated she was a huge fan of entering competitions.

Well her “ship came in”. She received a cheque for $2,900. She was one of a large group of people who shared in the North American Lottery win of $1,800,000. She couldn’t believe her luck, went to the local general store and cashed the cheque.

Surprise, surprise, it bounced. The bank rang the store owner to say the cheque was counterfeit. He then rang his client who immediately advised she had a letter stating her win. Judge Judy handed the cheque to the Court Officer, who agreed, it definitely looked like a real cheque because it stated “legitimate cheque”.

Judge Judy awarded in favour of the Plaintiff and the Defendant had to repay $2,900. Her last comments made to the Defendant “you are a stupid woman – you don’t get anything for nothing “.
