How to…Substitute Ingredients

When you don’t have an ingredient, dashing down to the local shop isn’t always very desirable after a long day at work.

Or, if you have an allergy to a particular ingredient, simply “holding your nose” isn’t an option.

Thus, I’ve compiled this list to help you overcome either of these issues.

Listed below are some common ingredients and their acceptable substitutes (work on the assumption that the measurements are the same).

Butter: substitute with…olive oil, vegetable oil, margarine, or grape seed oil


Corn starch: substitute with…flour

Flour: substitute with…almond meal, walnut meal, rice flour


Wheat: substitute with…rice flour, corn flour


Chicken: substitute with…tofu, fish, turkey


Minced beef: substitute with…minced chicken, minced turkey, minced buffalo (unlikely in Australia), minced kangaroo (unlikely anywhere but Australia)


Peanut butter: substitute with…almond butter, soy butter


Milk: substitute with…soy milk, rice milk
