A quick and easy guide to updating your living spaces as we head into new seasons

It is that time of the year when seasons are shifting all over the globe. Whether you are breaking out your bare legs at the first signs of sun, or pulling winter-clothes from the back of the closet, a new season is always a great time for a change of your interior design. Let’s have a look at simple ways to update our homes for the upcoming season.

Going into winter

With the yellowing trees and a crisp chill in the air, it is time to cosy up to soft textures and warm colours. Covering couches with fluffy throws instantly adds inviting texture to a living room space. Olive greens and oranges in autumn work wonders for setting the seasonal tone. In winter deep reds warm up the soul, especially paired with deep creams and soft browns.

Cuddle up in your bedroom with layers of natural tones; think wood, stone and sand. Add scented candles for an inviting atmosphere and peaceful aroma.

Going into summer

With the world waking up to fresh bouts of colour, give your décor a new lease on life. Simple is best, so opt for crisp whites with bright details. Keep lines basic and silhouettes clean, with lots of sunlight flooding in from open windows.

For an instant burst of summer in the home, nothing beats an arrangement of fresh flowers. Don’t fuss too much with perfect symmetry; just stick them in an arrangement of simple vases with different heights.

In the bedroom it is time for soft duvets and comforters in the brightest white. Add texture rather than heavy colour to keep things fresh.

Take care when putting away heavy blankets and throws for next winter. Martha Stewart recommends a cool and dry cupboard lined with acid-free tissue paper to avoid discolouring. Although finding storage space for bulky bedding can be a challenge, avoid plastic containers that don’t allow fibres to breathe. As a rule, airing out all linen before and after storing prevents it from getting too stuffy.

Swinging with the seasons

Updating your home décor style with the changing seasons is a fun way of keeping things fresh. Easy details to change are covers for scatter cushions, throws, wall hangings, ornaments and rugs. Also invest in different bedding for summer and winter. Besides an update for your bedroom décor, different seasons require heavier or lighter fabrics for a comfortable slumber.

Keep base elements like curtains and carpets neutral. A basic canvas can just be accentuated with splashes of colour as the weather cools and warms, making re-decorating throughout the year easier on your budget, and easy to update.
