National Men’s Health Week: June 15 – June 21 2009
It is very easy to put our health and wellbeing at the bottom of the priority list, especially as our days get busier and our limited time, even more precious. Winter can be a fantastic time to get your health and wellbeing back under control. With colder months upon us, you will make changes to diet and exercise – a tough call when all you want to do is hibernate.
So, stay focused and resist the temptation to hide until summer. It is a perfect time to take stock of you health and well-being and to re-evaluate your lifestyle. The aim is to focus on the health issues that are specific to men and are often forgotten or ignored.
For some men, having a health check can be a daunting process and many put it off. Fear of the unknown or of receiving worrying health news is often among the reasons men do not visit their GP.
It is crucial that men have regular health checkups especially over the age of 45 where men are at risk for several diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and prostate and bowel cancer.
Approximately 60% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented through simple lifestyle choices such as eating foods which are have a low GI (Glycemic Index) and much healthier, and cutting out the amount of fat in the foods consumed. Also, get some sort of daily physical activity like walking for an hour, gardening or playing golf – It can all help in turning your health around and it is never too late to start.
Currently in Australia over 442,545 men are diagnosed with diabetes alone, that is approximately 30,000 more than women. Come on guys, we need you to take better care of yourselves – or women will end up running the world!!
