Christine Watson of Marquette Turner Luxury Homes writes:
Did you know, one in eight men will experience depression in their lifetime, most of whom will not seek help. One in 11 men will develop prostate cancer before they are 70 and about 3,000 men die of prostate cancer in Australia each year.
Movember’s mission is to change the face of men’s health and concentrate on the awareness of depression in men and prostate cancer.
It’s mission is growing throughout the world, and Down Under is supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue: the national depression initiative.
Historically men are poor at looking after their health and statistics show the life expectancy for an Australia male is 78.6 years compared to women of 83.5 years. Studies have also shown that men rarely have health check ups because:
they are scared it will lead to a hospital visit;
embarrassed to discuss their health issues;
find it too hard to see a GP because of limited opening hours;
can’t be bothered marking an appointment;
and, it has been found the reason for the poor state of men’s health is mainly due to a lack of awareness.
By using the moustache as a catalyst, Movember hopes to bring about change and alter the way of thinking about the serious issues of men’s health by putting a fun twist on it. Men are being asked to “grow that moustache” and be sponsored by your supporters.
Regardless of how cultivated that Mo is – give generously to those who are raising funds for this special cause.
