Thursday 3rd December 2009 is the International Day of the Disabled People. The World Health Organisation estimates that there are 600 million disabled people worldwide, approximately 10% of the world population. It is also estimated that about 80% of all disabled people live in developing countries.
In 1982 the United Nations committed to promote the full participation of disabled people in social life and development, as well as prevention and rehabilitation measures. Even today, disabled people are still excluded from society in many countries.
Handicap International has in 20 years, changed from being an emergency organisation with a medical focus on disabled people, to an organisation which promotes the human rights of disabled people. They are working in partnership with organisations at local, national and international levels to empower disabled people worldwide and encourage their inclusion into society.
This day aims to raise awareness on disabled people’s rights at national and international levels.
