I’m not sure if it’s cool to say you like the Pet Shop Boys anymore, in fact I’m not sure it ever was?

That aside my favourite pop group are the Pet Shop Boys and they have been since I saw the “West End Girls” music video in 1986. I was only 10 years old at the time but it won me over straight away and I have loved them ever since.

Through all the different and sometimes difficult stages of my life I have found enormous comfort in listening to the Pet Shop Boys – it makes me feel great. Whether studying, contemplating, celebrating or consoling myself, their music makes me feel good. There is no other music that I connect with as much and I can play the same song over and over again or the same album continuously and never feel sick of it.

When I was in Middle High School it dawned on me that the Pet Shop Boys were probably gay, and in any case were definitely gay icons. I never considered that at all until I was around 14 or 15, although others certainly had and it was one of those choices I made early on to stand for what I believe in. It would have been easier and “cooler” to have kept the fact that I liked them so much to myself, but I figured that living a lie in any way was not how I wanted my life to go.

In 1992/1993 the Pet Shop boys released the album titled “Very” and as always I loved the music on it. At that stage I was in Senior High school and my best friend and I were thrilled. Many of my school mates said if you like this stuff you must be gay! I laughed it off, but the reality was I was starting to go through the internal emotional struggle to find exactly who I was. Again the Pet Shop Boys‚ music was my comfort.

Through it all I have listened to songs like “Always on my Mind”, “West End Girls”, “Paninero”, “Go West” and have played the album “Discography” to the point where the CD Player should have exploded (thankfully itunes and mp3’s saved me!).

I’m now 33 years old and the Pet Shop Boys have released a new album titled “Yes”. As always I love it and their longevity and creativity is a source of massive inspiration to me every day of my life.
